Polished concrete gives modern homes a seamless, low-maintenance floor that flows from inside to out. We grind and polish a cured slab to reveal a smooth, refined surface with the sheen you choose. It suits open-plan living, alfresco zones and pool surrounds across Logan and Brisbane’s southside.

What polished concrete actually is

Polished concrete is a cured slab that we mechanically grind and refine with progressively finer diamond tooling. Each pass removes a little more of the surface and lifts the shine. The result is a hard, dense floor that shows the natural character of the concrete – the cement, the sand and, if you choose, the stone within.

People often confuse polished concrete with a coating or a topping. It is neither. There is no paint, epoxy or overlay sitting on top. We work the slab itself, so the finish wears the way the concrete does, which is to say for decades.

If you want a similar refined look on an outdoor slab, honed concrete is the close cousin. It uses the same grinding process but stops at a lower sheen, which gives better grip underfoot. More on that below.

Where polished concrete suits a modern home

Polished concrete has become a signature of contemporary Queensland homes, and for good reason. It pairs beautifully with clean lines, large glazing and an open floor plan.

We see it used most often in:

Open-plan kitchens, living and dining areas
Hallways and entries where foot traffic is heavy
Alfresco and undercover patios and entertaining areas
Pool surrounds and courtyards
Studios, garages and workshops

The look works because the floor recedes and lets the rest of the room speak. A polished slab reflects light, which makes a space feel larger and brighter. In a Logan or Brisbane home built for the climate, that brightness matters through the cooler winter months.

Grind and polish levels explained

Not all polished concrete is the same. The finish is set by two things: how much we grind, and how far we polish.

Grind level controls how much aggregate you see:

Cream, or no grind – we barely touch the surface, so you keep the smooth cement layer with no stone showing.
Salt and pepper – a light grind that exposes the fine sand and a scatter of small stone.
Full aggregate – a deeper grind that reveals the larger stone across the whole floor, similar in feel to exposed aggregate but ground flat and smooth.

Polish level controls the shine, from a flat matte through to a mirror gloss. We talk through both choices on site, because a sample seen in your own light tells you far more than a photo on a screen.

Choosing your sheen: matte, satin or high-gloss

Sheen is where personal taste comes in. There is no wrong answer, only what suits your home.

Matte hides the odd scuff and footprint well. It reads soft and modern.
Satin is the middle ground most clients land on. It gives a gentle glow without a harsh reflection.
High-gloss delivers that showroom mirror finish. It looks stunning, though it shows dust sooner and asks for more frequent cleaning.

Bear in mind that a higher gloss can feel slippery when wet. Indoors that is rarely an issue. Around a pool or on an open patio, we usually recommend a lower sheen, or honed concrete, so the surface stays safe underfoot.

Living with polished concrete

One of the biggest draws is how little the floor asks of you. There is no grout to scrub, no timber to reseal every year and no tiles to lift and replace.

Day to day, a polished floor needs:

A dry dust mop or soft broom to lift grit
A damp mop with a pH-neutral cleaner
No harsh acids or bleach, which can dull the finish over time

Every few years we can re-burnish a floor to bring the sheen back if it has softened in a busy household. Because we are polishing the slab and not a coating, there is nothing to peel or flake. That is a real advantage in our humid climate.

Getting the indoor-outdoor flow right

The magic of polished concrete is continuity. When the same floor runs from your kitchen, through the sliding doors and onto the alfresco, the boundary between inside and out almost disappears. The home feels bigger and the entertaining space feels like one room.

To get that flow right, we plan it early. A few things make the difference:

Pouring the indoor and outdoor slabs to work together in level and colour
Switching to a lower sheen or a honed finish outdoors for grip
Placing control joints where they read as a design line, not an afterthought
Matching any new outdoor pour to the existing floor as closely as the concrete allows
