What Is Stencil Concrete?

Stencil concrete is a decorative finishing technique that creates the appearance of brick, tile, cobblestone, or natural stone on a concrete surface. Paper or plastic stencils are laid over the concrete, and a colour hardener or topping mix is applied. When the stencils are removed, the pattern is revealed through the colour contrast between the treated and untreated areas.

The result is a patterned surface that gives you the look of individual pavers or stones, backed by the structural integrity of a solid concrete slab.

How We Apply Stencil Concrete

David and the Bunce Concrete team offer stencil finishes on both new concrete pours and existing surfaces across South Brisbane and Logan.

For new slabs, we pour and level the concrete as normal, then lay the stencil pattern while the surface is still workable. A dry-shake colour hardener is broadcast over the exposed areas and trowelled in. This creates a dense, hard-wearing coloured surface that bonds permanently with the concrete below.

Once the concrete has set enough, we peel away the stencils to reveal the pattern. The stencil lines remain as the base concrete colour, creating the appearance of mortar joints or grout lines between stones.

For overlay applications on existing concrete, David uses a polymer-modified topping mix that bonds to the original slab. The stencil and colour process is the same, giving worn or plain driveways and pathways a completely new appearance without the cost and disruption of demolition and replacement.

After curing, we apply a clear sealer to protect the colour and make the surface easy to clean.

Performance in Queensland Weather

Stencil concrete holds up well in south-east Queensland’s climate when installed and sealed correctly. The colour hardener creates an extremely dense surface layer that resists moisture penetration, which is important during our intense summer storm season.

UV-stable iron oxide pigments maintain their colour under prolonged sun exposure. Periodic resealing every three to five years keeps the finish looking fresh and prevents the surface from absorbing stains.

The patterned texture provides reasonable grip in wet conditions, suitable for pathways and porch areas. For areas near pools or on steep slopes where maximum slip resistance is needed, David may suggest exposed aggregate as an alternative.
