Concrete pathways connect your home to the street, the backyard and everything in between. Why concrete beats pavers and gravel for pathways
Gravel paths wash away in heavy rain. Paver paths shift, grow weeds between joints and become trip hazards over time. Concrete pathways stay put, drain properly and need almost zero maintenance. The maintenance difference is stark. A paver path looks tidy the day it goes down, but within a season the sand joints wash out and weeds push through. Getting drainage and falls right
A pathway is a long, narrow slab, and that shape makes drainage the single most important detail. Water has to run off the surface, not sit on it or pool against the house.
David sets a cross-fall on every path so water sheds sideways to a garden bed or lawn rather than tracking back towards your foundations. This matters most on paths that run along the side of the house, where a poor fall directs stormwater straight at the wall and, over time, into the subfloor. Getting the fall right protects the house as much as the path.
Where a path runs hard against the house, David keeps the finished surface below the internal floor level and slopes it away, so driving rain has nowhere to pool. The right width depends on how the path is used. Standard residential paths run 900mm to 1200mm wide. A side access path between the house and fence can sit at 900mm, while a front entry path benefits from the extra width of 1200mm so two people can walk side by side.
Accessibility changes the numbers. For wheelchair or mobility access, David builds to a minimum 1000mm width, and 1200mm where space allows, with gradients kept gentle enough to use safely. Where a path has to climb, he can form a compliant ramp with the correct slope and landings rather than defaulting to steps. A properly installed concrete pathway lasts 25 to 30 years or more with minimal maintenance. The key is correct subgrade preparation, appropriate thickness – typically 75 to 100mm for pathways – and well-placed control joints. Do those three things right and the path stays level and crack-free.
Upkeep is light. Hose off dirt and leaf litter, and clear any moss from shaded sections before it makes the surface slippery. Reseal decorative finishes every few years to keep the colour fresh and the surface protected. That is the full maintenance list.
Shaded side paths under trees or between close-set homes hold moisture and are the most likely spot for moss or algae. A quick going-over with a stiff broom and a mild wash keeps them safe. In full sun, a sealed path simply needs the occasional rinse. Either way, you spend minutes a year on maintenance rather than the ongoing weeding and re-levelling that pavers and gravel demand.
