Handrails are required where there are more than two risers or a total rise above 1 metre, and balustrades are needed wherever a fall of more than 1 metre is possible. Sloped blocks are the single most common reason homeowners in the region need concrete stairs, and they bring their own engineering demands. A staircase running down a slope has to resist not only the traffic load on the treads but the tendency of the whole structure to slide or settle on the grade. South East Queensland’s reactive clay soils add another factor. These soils swell when wet and shrink when they dry, and that seasonal movement can lift or drop anything founded on them. Drainage is planned so water moves away from the base rather than pooling and softening the ground. On steep sites, this groundwork is the difference between stairs that stay true for decades and stairs that crack within a few seasons.

Reinforcement, the pour and curing

Concrete is strong in compression but weak in tension, and stair treads carry load right at their exposed front edge, or nosing. That edge is where unreinforced concrete chips and cracks first. David ties steel reinforcement through the entire structure, from the footing up through the stringer and into each step, so the stairs act as one connected unit. Bar chairs hold the steel at the correct cover depth so it is properly encased and protected from corrosion.

The pour itself is done in a single continuous operation. Pouring a staircase in stages would create cold joints, which are lines of weakness where cracks later form. A monolithic pour eliminates them. Once placed, the concrete is compacted to remove air voids, the treads are finished, and the nosings are rounded slightly for comfort and durability. Queensland heat then has to be managed carefully. Concrete that dries too fast on a hot day loses strength and is prone to surface cracking, so David controls the cure to let the mix gain its full design strength before the stairs take traffic.

Finishes and slip resistance

The finish on a staircase is a safety decision first and an appearance decision second. A broom finish is the most popular choice because the fine ridges give excellent grip even when the treads are wet, and it suits almost any home. Where you want the stairs to look like more than raw concrete, stencil concrete adds a decorative pattern while keeping a textured, non-slip surface. A concrete staircase asks very little of you over its life. Give the treads an occasional sweep and hose to clear leaves and grit, and check that the drainage at the base is still carrying water away. Decorative and sealed finishes benefit from a fresh coat of sealer every few years to keep colour strong and the surface easy to clean. Beyond that, there is nothing to sand, stain or replace. A properly built set of concrete stairs will comfortably outlast timber alternatives several times over, which is a large part of why they work out cheaper in the long run.
