When you need a retaining wall
Sloped blocks are common across suburbs like Springwood, Shailer Park, Daisy Hill, Rochedale and throughout the wider Logan region. If you are building a shed, extending a patio, widening a driveway or simply trying to create a usable flat yard, you almost certainly need a retaining wall to hold the cut or fill in place. Cutting into a slope leaves a bank of soil that wants to slump back; building up a level pad creates fill that wants to spread. A retaining wall stops both.
Boundary retaining walls also keep your soil from encroaching on neighbouring properties, and they are often the only way to make the most of a tight, sloped block. Erosion control is another driver. After heavy summer rain, unretained slopes wash out and carry topsoil, mulch and sometimes whole garden beds downhill. A well-drained retaining wall stabilises the ground and protects everything above and below it.
Choosing the right type of wall
There is no single best retaining wall. The right choice depends on the height you need to retain, the soil behind it, the loads above and your budget. David assesses each site and recommends the most cost-effective option that will still perform for the long term.
Timber sleeper walls suit low garden terraces and lighter loads. They are quick to build and cost-effective, but they have the shortest lifespan of the three and are best kept for walls well under a metre.
Concrete block (masonry) walls are a strong mid-range option. The cores are filled with concrete and steel reinforcement at engineered spacings, giving good strength at a reasonable price. They work well for moderate heights and can be rendered or capped for a clean finish.
Poured concrete walls offer the highest strength and the longest lifespan, and they are the natural choice for taller walls, walls carrying heavy loads, or anywhere failure would be costly. Cast as a continuous reinforced structure, they resist the enormous sideways pressure that soil and water generate behind a tall wall. For the walls that matter most structurally, this is the option David most often recommends.
Engineering, wall height and council approval
Retaining walls are structural elements, and Queensland treats them that way. As a general rule, walls over 1 metre in retained height require engineering design and a building approval. Even shorter walls can need engineering if they carry additional loads, known as a surcharge, from a driveway, a building, a pool or sloping ground above the wall. Those surcharge loads dramatically increase the forces the wall has to resist, so a 900mm wall under a driveway can need more engineering than a freestanding 1.2 metre garden wall.
David coordinates with structural engineers to make sure every wall is designed for its specific site conditions, soil type and loading. Reading and interpreting engineering drawings is part of his daily work, and he translates those specifications into accurate, compliant construction on site. How David builds a retaining wall
- Site assessment and engineering – David inspects the site, measures the retained heights, identifies the soil conditions and works out what loads the wall must carry. For walls that require it, he coordinates with a structural engineer to produce certified designs and, where needed, a building approval.
- Excavation and footings – The wall foundation is excavated to the engineered depth. On reactive clay this often means going deeper to reach stable material. Footings are poured to the specified dimensions and reinforcement schedule, because the footing is what stops the wall sliding or tipping.
- Wall construction and reinforcement – The wall is formed and poured with continuous steel reinforcement tying the footing to the wall stem, so the two act as one rigid structure. For block walls, the cores are filled with concrete and rebar at the engineered spacings.
- Drainage and backfill – Agricultural drainage pipe (ag-pipe) is laid along the base behind the wall, surrounded by free-draining gravel and wrapped in filter fabric to stop it silting up. Weep holes let water escape through the face. Backfill is then compacted in controlled layers so the ground behind the wall is stable but not overloading it.
Drainage is the most critical detail
More retaining walls fail from poor drainage than from any other cause, and it is worth understanding why. Soil behind a wall soaks up water during Queensland’s heavy downpours. If that water cannot escape, it builds up and pushes against the back of the wall with enormous force. This is hydrostatic pressure, and it can more than double the load the wall was designed to resist. Walls that would have stood for 50 years crack, bow and fail because water had nowhere to go.
David installs a complete drainage system on every retaining wall he builds. Ag-pipe at the base carries water away to a legal discharge point. Gravel backfill gives the water an easy path down to the pipe. Filter fabric keeps soil out of the gravel so the system does not clog over time, and weep holes provide a secondary escape route. None of this is an optional extra. It is the part of the job that determines whether the wall lasts, and it is built into every quote.
Structural foundations for new work
Alongside retaining walls, David builds the structural foundations that new sheds, extensions, decks and outbuildings rely on. That includes strip footings under load-bearing walls, pad footings for posts and columns, and edge beams that stiffen a slab against ground movement. Maintenance and longevity
A well-built concrete or block retaining wall needs very little attention over its life, which is a large part of its value. The main thing to keep an eye on is drainage. Every year or so, check that the weep holes are clear and that water is still flowing away from the base rather than pooling behind the wall. Clear any leaves, mulch or silt that could block them. Keep deep-rooted trees and heavy new loads well back from the top of the wall, since roots and added surcharge are two of the few things that can overload a structure that was sound when it was built.
Beyond that, there is little to do. A poured concrete wall has no mortar joints to repoint and no timber to rot, so it comfortably outlasts sleeper alternatives. Rendered block walls may want a fresh coat every so often to keep them looking sharp, but that is cosmetic rather than structural. Built correctly and drained properly, a retaining wall is a decades-long piece of infrastructure, not a recurring expense.
What affects retaining wall pricing
Several factors drive the cost of a retaining wall. Retained height is the biggest, because a taller wall needs a deeper footing, more reinforcement and far more material to resist the load. Total wall length sets the overall size of the job. Soil conditions and excavation difficulty matter, especially where rock or groundwater is encountered. Engineering and certification requirements add cost on walls over a metre or under surcharge, and the complexity of the drainage system plays a part.
Site access is often underestimated. A wall at the bottom of a steep backyard with no machine access costs more to build than the same wall a truck can reach, simply because materials have to be moved by hand.
